Ezekiel 40:46
“And the chamber whose prospect is toward the north is for the priests, the keepers of the charge of the altar: these are the sons of Zadok among the sons of Levi, which come near to the LORD to minister unto him.”
Context:The book of Ezekiel is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, and it contains visions and messages from God to the prophet Ezekiel. In chapter 40, Ezekiel receives a vision of a future temple, which is described in great detail. The vision presents a restored temple with measurements and specifications, including the chambers for the priests and their duties.
Meaning and Significance:
The chambers for the priests:In this verse, Ezekiel describes one specific chamber within the temple, facing north, which is designated for the priests. This indicates that the priesthood will have a vital role in the future temple worship.
Keepers of the charge of the altar:The priests who are assigned to this chamber are responsible for the duties related to the altar. The altar is a central element of worship, where sacrifices are offered to God. This verse highlights the importance of the priests in maintaining the sacredness of the altar and the offerings presented to God.
The sons of Zadok:The verse mentions that the priests assigned to this chamber are specifically the “sons of Zadok” among the sons of Levi. Zadok was a high priest during the time of King David and King Solomon. The descendants of Zadok were known for their faithfulness to God and their commitment to serving Him. This reference suggests that in the future temple, there will be a distinction made for the descendants of Zadok, emphasizing the importance of faithfulness and integrity in the priestly service.
Coming near to the Lord:The verse also highlights that these priests, the sons of Zadok, are the ones who “come near to the LORD to minister unto him.” This phrase emphasizes the privileged position of the priests in being able to approach God and minister in His presence. It underscores the significance of their role as mediators between God and the people, representing the people before God and offering worship and sacrifices on their behalf.
Overall, this verse portrays a future vision of a restored temple with a designated chamber for the priests. It emphasizes the importance of the priests in their role of maintaining the altar, the descendants of Zadok in particular, and their close proximity to God as they minister in His presence. It highlights the significance of faithfulness, integrity, and the sacred nature of worship in the service of the priesthood.
