Ezekiel 47:5

Posted on 18 May at 14:57
Listen to this article

“Afterward he measured a thousand; and it was a river that I could not pass over: for the waters were risen, waters to swim in, a river that could not be passed over.”

Context: The book of Ezekiel is a prophetic book in the Old Testament. The prophet Ezekiel was taken captive to Babylon along with other Israelites during the Babylonian exile. In this particular vision, Ezekiel is shown a vision of a future temple and the restoration of the land.

The Vision of the Water: In Ezekiel 47, the prophet sees a vision of a river flowing out from the temple. The river starts as a trickle but gradually grows into a mighty river. Verse 5 describes a specific point along the river where it had become a vast and unpassable river.

Symbolism: The vision of the river holds symbolic significance. In the Bible, water is often associated with life, cleansing, and the Holy Spirit. The river represents the abundant and life-giving presence of God flowing from His dwelling place, the temple. It signifies the blessings, spiritual refreshing, and restoration that come from God.

The Unpassable River: Verse 5 emphasizes the immensity of the river, stating that it could not be passed over. This signifies the overwhelming abundance of God’s blessings and the impossibility of fully comprehending or containing them. It demonstrates the boundless nature of God’s provision and the impossibility of exhausting His grace.

Application: As believers, we can draw several applications from this verse:

  • Abundant Provision: Just as the river in Ezekiel’s vision provided abundant water, God promises to abundantly provide for His people. He is a God of abundance, and His blessings are immeasurable.
  • Unfathomable Grace: The river’s unpassable nature reminds us that God’s grace is boundless and beyond our comprehension. We cannot earn or exhaust His love and mercy. His grace is available to us in abundance, and we should humbly receive it.
  • Spiritual Refreshing: The river represents the Holy Spirit and the spiritual refreshing that comes from God. We can find renewal, strength, and guidance through the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
  • Trust and Surrender: When faced with a river we cannot pass over, it requires us to trust in God’s leading and surrender to His plans. We need to rely on His wisdom and guidance, knowing that His ways are higher than ours.

In conclusion, Ezekiel 47:5 depicts a vision of a river that cannot be passed over, symbolizing God’s overwhelming abundance, grace, and provision. It encourages us to trust in God, receive His abundant blessings, and find spiritual refreshing through the presence of the Holy Spirit.
