Ezekiel 48:32
“And at the east side four thousand and five hundred: and three gates; and one gate of Joseph, one gate of Benjamin, one gate of Dan.”
Ezekiel 48:32 is part of the concluding chapter of the book of Ezekiel, which describes the division of the land among the twelve tribes of Israel in the promised land. This chapter portrays a vision of the restored Israel, with specific allocations of land for each tribe.
In this verse, Ezekiel is detailing the east side of the city and its gates. It states that there are four thousand and five hundred cubits on the east side, which corresponds to the length of the section of land. Additionally, there are three gates on the east side.
The verse further mentions the names of three tribes associated with these gates: Joseph, Benjamin, and Dan. It is noteworthy that Joseph is mentioned instead of his two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, who were both allotted separate portions of land in the previous verses of Ezekiel 48. However, it is believed that Joseph is used here to represent both Ephraim and Manasseh collectively, as they were considered as separate tribes within Israel.
The gate of Joseph signifies the entrance point to the section of land allocated to the descendants of Joseph. This is an important reminder of God’s faithfulness to His covenant with Joseph and his descendants.
The gate of Benjamin indicates the entrance to the portion of land given to the tribe of Benjamin. Benjamin was one of the twelve sons of Jacob, making him part of the original Israelite lineage.
Lastly, the gate of Dan marks the entrance to the territory given to the tribe of Dan. Dan was another of Jacob’s sons and one of the twelve tribes of Israel.
These specific allocations of land demonstrate the fulfilment of God’s promises to the Israelites and the restoration of the nation after the exile. The vision described by Ezekiel offers hope and assurance to the people, affirming that God has not forgotten His chosen people and will bring about the establishment of a prosperous and united Israel.
In conclusion, Ezekiel 48:32 describes the division of land on the east side of the restored Israel, mentioning the measurements, the number of gates, and the tribes associated with those gates. It reflects the fulfilment of God’s promises to the Israelites and their future restoration.
