Ezekiel 48:1

Now these are the names of the Tribes, from the North end to the coast of the way of Hathlon, as one goeth to Hamath, Hazarenan, the border of Damascus Northward, to þ coast of Hamath (for these are his sides East & West) a portion for Dan. Ezekiel 48:1 (KJV)

The book of Ezekiel is a prophetic book in the Old Testament that contains visions and messages from God given to the prophet Ezekiel. In chapter 48 the prophet describes the division of the land among the twelve tribes of Israel in the future restoration of the nation.

Ezekiel 48 outlines the distribution of land among the tribes in the future messianic kingdom. The chapter provides detailed descriptions of the borders and portions assigned to each tribe, including their size and location. In verse 1 Ezekiel begins by describing the portion allotted to the tribe of Dan.

According to Ezekiel’s vision, the tribe of Dan would receive its portion “from the north end to the coast of the way of Hethlon, as one goeth to Hamath, Hazarenan, the border of Damascus northward, to the coast of Hamath.” These geographical references give a general idea of Dan’s territory, though some of the places are not well‑known today, making precise boundaries difficult to identify.

The tribe of Dan held a prominent place in Israel’s history, yet it also carried a negative reputation for idolatry and apostasy (Judges 18:30‑31). Some scholars suggest that this reputation may be one factor influencing why their inheritance is mentioned last in Ezekiel’s division of the land.

While the passage has a literal meaning related to the division of land, many Bible scholars also see symbolic significance in the allocation of territories. Dan’s portion, situated in the northernmost part of the land, may represent the tribe’s position in relation to the Gentile nations and a potential role in extending God’s blessings to surrounding regions.

Overall, Ezekiel 48:1 offers a glimpse into the future division of the land among the tribes of Israel during the messianic kingdom. It emphasizes the faithfulness of God in fulfilling His promises to His people, even after periods of judgment and exile.
