Daniel 1:9

Now God had brought Daniel into fauour and tender loue with the Prince of the Eunuches. Daniel 1:9 (KJV)

The book of Daniel opens with the Babylonian captivity of Israel. Daniel and his friends were among the young men of Israel taken captive and brought to Babylon, and in Daniel 1 they were chosen to serve in the palace of King Nebuchadnezzar. Daniel, in particular, stands out as a young man of exceptional character and wisdom.

The verse states, “Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.” This favour was granted by God, not because of Daniel’s personal charm or skill, but as a divine blessing that gave him special treatment and privileges. Those privileges allowed Daniel to maintain his faith and his dietary restrictions even in a foreign land. The favour extended to the prince of the eunuchs, the official in charge of the young captives, and the prince’s “tender love” reflects a deep affection and compassion toward Daniel. The prince’s attitude demonstrates how Daniel’s character and conduct impacted those around him.

From this passage we draw three clear lessons. First, Daniel’s experience underscores our dependence on God; our ultimate success and favour come from God’s guidance and grace. Second, Daniel’s commitment to God made a lasting impression on others, showing that our conduct and integrity can influence those around us and create opportunities to share our faith. Third, despite the challenging circumstances of exile, Daniel trusted that God was in control of his life. This encourages us to trust in God’s providence and sovereignty, knowing He works in all situations for our good.
