As concerning the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken away: yet their liues were prolonged for a season and time. Daniel 7:12 (KJV)

Context and Background: Daniel 7 is a prophetic chapter that records a vision given to the prophet Daniel. The vision consists of four beasts representing four kingdoms and their rulership over the earth. In this particular verse, Daniel focuses on the aftermath of the dominion of the beasts and the judgment that follows that dominion.

Dominion taken away: The phrase “they had their dominion taken away” refers to the end of the rulership of the first three beasts, symbolizing the earthly kingdoms. In the preceding verses, Daniel describes the rise and fall of these kingdoms, which are traditionally understood as representing Babylon, Medo‑Persia, Greece, and Rome.

Lives prolonged: The phrase “yet their lives were prolonged” refers to the continued existence or survival of the kingdoms represented by the first three beasts. While their dominion is taken away, their influence or remnants might persist for a “season and time.” The expression “for a season and time” suggests that, even after their dominion is taken away, these kingdoms or powers will have a limited period of extended existence or influence before their ultimate end.

Judgment taken out: The phrase “the judgment was taken out of the midst of the great” refers to the removal of authority from the earthly kingdoms symbolized by the beasts.

Saints possessing the kingdom: The clause “the saints of the most High shall possess the kingdom” indicates that, after the earthly powers lose their authority, God’s people will inherit everlasting rule. This reflects the biblical theme that human kingdoms are temporary while God’s kingdom endures.

Interpretation and Application: This verse, along with the entire vision of Daniel 7, conveys important spiritual and historical truths. It emphasizes that no earthly power or kingdom can endure forever. Despite their dominance, all human rulership will ultimately give way to God’s eternal kingdom. The vision provides comfort to God’s people, assuring them that even when they face oppression and persecution, there is a limit to the reign of evil forces. From a Christian perspective, this passage points forward to the ultimate victory of Christ and His eternal kingdom, which will never be overthrown. It reminds believers to put their hope and trust in God’s sovereignty, recognizing that worldly powers are temporary and will ultimately fade away.

Overall, Daniel 7:12 underscores the divine control over history, the temporary nature of earthly kingdoms, and the assurance of God’s ultimate victory. It encourages believers to remain faithful and steadfast, knowing that God’s purposes will be accomplished in His perfect timing.
