Daniel 7:13

I saw in the night visions, and behold, one like the sonne of man, came with the clouds of heauen, and came to the Ancient of daies, and they brought him neere before him. Daniel 7:13 (KJV)

Daniel 7 presents a prophetic vision given to the prophet Daniel concerning future events. In the first part of the chapter Daniel observes four great beasts that have traditionally been interpreted as representing four successive empires: the lion (often linked to Babylon), the bear (often linked to Medo‑Persia), the leopard (often linked to Greece), and the terrifying and dreadful beast (often linked to Rome). In this verse Daniel sees someone described as “one like the Son of man” coming with the clouds of heaven. The clouds that accompany the Son of man symbolize divine authority, power, glory, and majesty, indicating that this figure originates from the heavenly realm.

The Son of man approaches the “Ancient of days,” a title for God the Father. This scene portrays a moment of divine judgment and the inauguration of God’s eternal kingdom. Being brought near before the Ancient of days signifies the Son of man’s exaltation and authority. The imagery echoes Psalm 110:1, where the Lord says, “Sit thou at my right hand until I make thine enemies thy footstool,” suggesting that the Son of man is granted dominion over all things.

Many interpret Daniel 7:13 as pointing to the future coming of a divine figure—the Messiah—who will receive everlasting dominion and establish God’s everlasting kingdom while executing divine judgment. Christians view this verse as evidence for Jesus’ identity as the Son of man, affirming His authority, glory, and future reign. Believers are therefore encouraged to acknowledge Jesus as the divine Son of man and submit to His lordship.

The vision also offers hope: it assures that despite present challenges, a greater, everlasting kingdom is being prepared. The certainty of judgment highlighted in the passage should motivate righteous living, knowing that every action will ultimately be judged. Moreover, the Son of man’s approach to the Ancient of days demonstrates God’s sovereign control over history, inviting trust in His ultimate plan even amid uncertainty.
