Daniel 7:19

Posted on 18 May at 11:27

Then I would know the truth of the fourth beast, which was diuerse from al the others, exceeding dreadful, whose teeth were of yron, and his nailes of brasse, which deuoured, brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with his feete, Daniel 7:19 (KJV)

were of iron, and his nails

of brass;

which devoured, brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with his feet; Daniel 7:19 (KJV)

In this verse the prophet Daniel expresses a deep desire to understand the truth concerning the fourth beast that appears in his vision. The fourth beast is set apart from the three beasts mentioned earlier in Daniel 7 and is described as “exceedingly dreadful.” Its distinctive features—teeth of iron, nails of brass, a habit of devouring, breaking things into pieces, and stamping the residue with its feet—convey great strength and destructive power.

To grasp the meaning of the passage it helps to view it within the broader context of Daniel 7, where four great beasts rise out of the sea, each traditionally understood to symbolize a successive world empire. The common historic interpretation links these beasts to Babylon, Medo‑Persia, Greece, and finally Rome. The fourth beast, which Daniel specifically asks about in verse 19, is therefore identified by many scholars as representing the Roman Empire. The Roman Empire’s reputation for military might, extensive conquests, and the ability to subdue other nations aligns closely with the vivid description of iron teeth, brass nails, and crushing domination.

Daniel’s request for the “truth” reflects his intense curiosity and his need to comprehend the nature, actions, and ultimate significance of this terrifying power. The passage underscores the destructive capacity and dominance of the fourth beast, pointing to the historical reality of Roman imperial authority.

Beyond the historical identification, the vision points forward to the eventual rise and fall of earthly kingdoms and the ultimate establishment of God’s everlasting kingdom. As with any biblical study, consulting a range of reputable commentaries and scholarly resources enriches understanding and provides a fuller picture of the prophetic symbolism contained in Daniel 7:19.
