Daniel 9:6

Posted on 18 May at 14:57

“Neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets, which spake in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land.”

Historical Context:Daniel 9 is set during the time when the Israelites were in exile in Babylon. The prophet Daniel, who was taken captive by the Babylonians, understood from the writings of the prophet Jeremiah that the exile would last for seventy years (Daniel 9:2). As the seventy years drew to a close, Daniel sought the Lord in prayer and fasting, confessing the sins of his people and seeking God’s mercy and restoration.

In Daniel 9:6, Daniel acknowledges that the people of Israel did not heed the words of God’s prophets. Throughout their history, God had sent prophets to speak on His behalf, calling the people to repentance and obedience. However, the Israelites often rejected the prophets’ messages and failed to listen to their warnings and teachings.

The prophets addressed various audiences, including the kings, princes, fathers (ancestors), and all the people of the land. Despite the authority and credibility of these prophetic messages, the Israelites disregarded them, leading to disobedience and straying further from God’s will.

Lessons and Application:

  • Importance of Prophetic Guidance:God appointed prophets to communicate His will, reveal His character, and guide His people. Their messages were crucial for the spiritual well-being and obedience of the Israelites. Similarly, in our lives today, we must pay attention to God’s Word, which serves as our divine guide and instruction.
  • Consequences of Ignoring God’s Word:When the Israelites failed to listen to the prophets, they suffered the consequences of their disobedience, including captivity and exile. Disregarding God’s Word can lead to spiritual and moral decline, causing us to stray from His purpose for our lives.
  • Repentance and Intercession:Daniel’s prayer exemplifies humility, repentance, and intercession on behalf of his people. Recognizing their collective sin and turning to God in repentance, Daniel seeks God’s mercy and forgiveness. We too should approach God with a contrite heart, confessing our sins and interceding for others.
  • Learning from History:Daniel’s acknowledgment of the people’s neglect of the prophets serves as a reminder for us to learn from the mistakes of the past. We should value and heed God’s Word, taking it seriously and applying its teachings to our lives.
