Daniel 9:6

Neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets, which spake in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land.

Daniel 9:6 (KJV)

Daniel 9 takes place while the Israelites are in exile in Babylon. Daniel, who had been taken captive, understood from Jeremiah’s writings that the exile would last seventy years (Daniel 9:2). As that time drew near, he prayed and fasted, confessing the sins of his people and seeking God’s mercy and restoration.

In Daniel 9:6, Daniel acknowledges that the people did not heed God’s prophets. Throughout their history, God sent prophets to speak in His name, calling for repentance and obedience, but the people often rejected their messages. The verse lists the full scope of those addressed: kings, princes, fathers, and all the people of the land. This comprehensive list shows that the guilt of ignoring God’s word was shared by every level of society, from rulers to common people.

The prophets spoke in God’s name, giving their message divine authority, yet the people did not listen. Daniel uses “we” and “our,” including himself in the confession even though he personally was faithful. This identifies him with the nation’s sin and underscores the seriousness of rejecting prophetic revelation. The verse demonstrates that God’s warnings were clear and widespread, leaving the people without excuse.

  • Importance of prophetic guidance: God appointed prophets to communicate His will and guide His people. Their messages were crucial for obedience. Today, God’s Word serves as our divine guide, and we must pay attention to it.

  • Consequences of ignoring God’s Word: When Israel failed to listen, they suffered captivity and exile. Disregarding God’s Word can lead to spiritual and moral decline, causing us to stray from His purpose.

  • Repentance and intercession: Daniel’s prayer exemplifies humility and intercession. Recognizing collective sin, he turns to God for mercy. We too should approach God with a contrite heart, confessing our sins and interceding for others.

  • Learning from history: Daniel’s acknowledgment reminds us to learn from past mistakes. We should value and heed God’s Word, taking it seriously and applying its teachings.

This verse calls believers to examine their own responsiveness to God’s Word. Disobedience to God’s messengers brings judgment, but confession opens the door to restoration. Like Daniel, we can humble ourselves, identify with the sins of our community, and seek God’s mercy, trusting that He hears and forgives.
