Daniel 9:4

Posted on 18 May at 14:57

“And I prayed unto the Lord my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments.”

Context:The book of Daniel is a prophetic book that contains visions and prophecies given to the prophet Daniel during the Babylonian exile. In chapter 9, Daniel is studying the prophecies of Jeremiah and realises that the 70 years of captivity, as foretold by Jeremiah, are coming to an end. He prays a prayer of confession and intercession on behalf of himself and the people of Israel.

Prayer and Confession:Daniel begins by stating that he prayed unto the Lord his God. This indicates his personal relationship and dependence on God. Prayer is a vital aspect of our relationship with God, allowing us to communicate with Him and seek His guidance, mercy, and forgiveness.

Acknowledgment of God’s Greatness:Daniel acknowledges the greatness and dreadfulness of God. He recognises God’s power, holiness, and awe-inspiring nature. This acknowledgement demonstrates Daniel’s reverence and awe for the Almighty.

God’s Covenant and Mercy:Daniel acknowledges that God is a God who keeps His covenant and shows mercy to those who love Him and keep His commandments. Here, Daniel refers to the covenant relationship between God and the people of Israel, established in the Old Testament. It emphasises the importance of obedience and love for God as a response to His covenant faithfulness.

Application to Our Lives:As we study Daniel’s prayer, we can learn valuable lessons. We should cultivate a personal prayer life, seeking God’s guidance, forgiveness, and mercy. We should also recognise and acknowledge God’s greatness and holiness. Understanding God’s covenant faithfulness and His mercy, we should strive to love Him and obey His commandments.
