Daniel 9:3

Posted on 18 May at 14:57

“And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes.”

Context:Daniel 9 is a chapter that records Daniel’s prayer and confession on behalf of the people of Israel while they were in Babylonian captivity. In this verse, Daniel describes his attitude and actions as he seeks the Lord’s favor.

Daniel’s Determination:Daniel “set his face unto the Lord God.” This phrase signifies Daniel’s commitment and resolute determination to seek God’s presence and favour. It indicates his seriousness and earnestness in approaching God with his prayer.

Seeking God:Daniel sought God “by prayer and supplications.” Prayer is an essential part of our relationship with God, allowing us to communicate with Him. Supplications refer to specific requests or petitions made to God. Daniel’s choice to seek God through prayer highlights his dependence on the Lord and his desire to seek His will.

Fasting:Along with prayer, Daniel engaged in fasting. Fasting involves abstaining from food or certain pleasures for a specific period, often done to draw closer to God, seek His guidance, or express repentance. By fasting, Daniel demonstrated his seriousness, humility, and desire for spiritual breakthrough.

Sackcloth and Ashes:Daniel also wore sackcloth and covered himself in ashes. Sackcloth was a coarse material used as a symbol of mourning, repentance, and humility. Ashes, often associated with mourning and sorrow, represented a state of humility and contrition before God. Daniel’s use of these symbols expressed his deep repentance and acknowledgement of Israel’s sins.

Overall, Daniel 9:3 reveals Daniel’s deep devotion, commitment, and humility as he sought God’s favour and forgiveness for his people. His actions serve as an example for believers today, highlighting the importance of prayer, supplication, fasting, and sincere repentance when seeking the Lord’s presence and guidance.
