Daniel 10:16

“And, behold, one like the similitude of the sons of men touched my lips: then I opened my mouth, and spake, and said unto him that stood before me, O my lord, by the vision my sorrows are turned upon me, and I have retained no strength.”

Context: The Book of Daniel is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, written by the prophet Daniel during the Babylonian exile. In chapter 10, Daniel receives a vision that deeply affects him. The vision comes after a period of fasting and prayer, during which Daniel sought understanding about future events.

The appearance of a heavenly being: In verse 16, Daniel describes a celestial being who appeared to him “like the similitude of the sons of men.” This being touches Daniel’s lips, enabling him to speak. This encounter suggests that the being has a divine nature, and the touch represents an act of empowerment or commissioning.

Daniel’s response: Upon receiving the touch, Daniel addresses the being as “my lord” and expresses his distress. He explains that his sorrows are turned upon him, and he has lost his strength. This indicates that the vision he witnessed has deeply affected him emotionally and physically. Daniel recognizes his human limitations in the presence of this heavenly being.

The weight of the vision: The fact that Daniel’s sorrows are turned upon him and he has lost his strength highlights the magnitude of the vision he has seen. It indicates that the vision carries great significance and has a profound impact on Daniel’s well-being.

  • Overall: Daniel 10:16 portrays the weight of the divine encounter and the effect it has on Daniel. It emphasizes the need for humility and a deep sense of reverence when we come into contact with the supernatural or when we receive divine revelation.
