Daniel 10:15
And when hee had spoken such words vnto me, I set my face toward the ground, and I became dumbe. Daniel 10:15 (KJV)
In Daniel 10, Daniel mourns and fasts for three weeks. During this time, he receives a vision of a great figure, possibly an angelic being, who appears before him. This divine messenger explains that he has been sent in response to Daniel’s prayers. The sight of this heavenly visitor overwhelms Daniel, and he becomes weak and speechless. In verse 15, after the celestial being spoke to him, Daniel’s response was to fall on his face and be faint. In verse 15, Daniel writes, “And when I had seen him, I lay on my face, and I held my tongue.” This reaction demonstrates awe, reverence, and humility in the presence of the divine. The term “held my tongue” indicates speechlessness rather than intellectual deficiency, reflecting a common biblical theme where individuals encountering God or His messengers are overwhelmed and unable to speak. The word “speechless” in this context refers to Daniel’s inability to speak rather than suggesting any intellectual deficiency. It signifies his temporary loss of voice, which often accompanies a profound encounter with God or His messengers. Daniel was deeply moved and found himself unable to articulate a response. This passage reflects a common theme throughout the Bible where individuals, when confronted with the presence of God or His messengers, are often left in awe and humility, realizing their own limited nature in the face of the divine. To better understand the context, it’s helpful to explore the preceding verses.
