For the King of the North shall returne, and shall set forth a multitude greater then the former, and shall certainly come (after certaine yeeres) with a great armie & with much riches. Daniel 11:13 (KJV)

The book of Daniel is a prophetic book that contains visions and prophecies given to the prophet Daniel. In chapter 11 Daniel receives a detailed prophecy about future events, primarily focused on the conflicts between the “king of the North” and the “king of the South.” These two kingdoms refer to the Seleucid Empire (North) and the Ptolemaic Empire (South), which were major powers during the time of Daniel.

In this verse the “king of the north” refers to a ruler from the Seleucid Empire, located north of Israel. The verse states that the king of the north shall return, indicating that this ruler had previously engaged in military campaigns or conflicts. It further says he shall set forth a multitude greater than the former, meaning he would assemble a larger army than before. The prophecy adds that after certain years the king will come with a great army and much wealth, suggesting he would have gathered significant military power and resources during the period mentioned.

Historical fulfillment is found in the conflicts between the Seleucid and Ptolemaic empires. The Seleucid king Antiochus III, known as Antiochus the Great, returned with a larger army and attempted to regain territories previously lost to the Ptolemaic king Ptolemy V. He waged a series of campaigns to expand his empire and acquire wealth, thereby satisfying the description in Daniel 11:13.

While the passage has clear historical significance, it also points to broader biblical themes. It reminds readers of God’s sovereignty over the rise and fall of kingdoms and the fulfillment of His purposes throughout history. Studying this verse with reverence and discernment encourages believers to recognize that God is actively involved in the affairs of nations and that prophetic declarations can have both immediate and long‑term implications.

Overall, Daniel 11:13 highlights the return of the king of the north with a larger army and greater riches after a period of time, serving as a reminder of the historical fulfillment of biblical prophecy and the overarching theme of divine sovereignty over human history.
