Daniel 11:13

For the king of the north shall return, and shall set forth a multitude greater than the former, and shall certainly come after certain years with a great army and with much riches.

Daniel 11:13 (KJV)

The book of Daniel contains prophetic visions given to the prophet Daniel. In chapter 11, Daniel receives a detailed prophecy about future conflicts between the “king of the North” and the “king of the South.” These titles refer to the Seleucid Empire (north) and the Ptolemaic Empire (south), successor kingdoms to Alexander the Great’s empire.

In this verse, the “king of the north” is a ruler from the Seleucid Empire, located north of Israel. The verse states that this king “shall return,” indicating he had previously engaged in military campaigns. He will “set forth a multitude greater than the former,” meaning he would assemble a larger army than before. The prophecy adds that “after certain years” he will come with a great army and much riches, showing he had gathered significant military power and resources during that period. The phrase “shall certainly come” emphasizes the certainty of the event, highlighting the precision of God’s prophetic revelation.

The immediate context in Daniel 11:10-12 shows that the king of the south had previously defeated the north’s forces. This verse records the north’s return with an even larger force. Historical fulfillment is generally understood to be Antiochus III, known as Antiochus the Great, who later campaigned against Ptolemy V. He waged a series of campaigns to regain territories and acquire wealth, matching the description in Daniel 11:13.

While the passage has clear historical significance, it also points to broader biblical themes. It reminds readers of God’s sovereignty over the rise and fall of kingdoms and the fulfillment of His purposes throughout history. The “much riches” gathered by the king of the north shows how material wealth often fuels military ambition, yet it remains under God’s sovereign control. Studying this verse with reverence and discernment encourages believers to recognize that God is actively involved in the affairs of nations and that prophetic declarations can have both immediate and long-term implications.

Daniel 11:13 highlights the return of the king of the north with a larger army and greater riches after a period of time. It serves as a reminder of the historical fulfillment of biblical prophecy and the overarching theme of divine sovereignty over human history. God’s prophetic word is reliable, and He oversees the rise and fall of empires and rulers.
