Daniel 11:10

Posted on 18 May at 14:10
Listen to this article

“But his sons shall be stirred up, and shall assemble a multitude of great forces: and one shall certainly come, and overflow, and pass through: then shall he return, and be stirred up, even to his fortress.”

Historical Context:The book of Daniel is a prophetic book that contains visions and prophecies given to the prophet Daniel during the Babylonian exile. In chapter 11, Daniel receives a vision that provides a detailed account of future events, particularly concerning the conflicts and struggles between two powerful kingdoms: the Seleucid Empire (the “king of the north”) and the Ptolemaic Empire (the “king of the south”).

Key Players:The verse refers to “his sons” being stirred up, which is a reference to the successors of the Seleucid king, Seleucus IV Philopator. The prophecy describes their military actions and conquests.

Assembling a Multitude of Great Forces:The verse states that the sons of Seleucus IV Philopator would gather a great army. After Seleucus IV’s death, his son, Antiochus IV Epiphanes, came to power and continued his father’s policies. Antiochus Epiphanes assembled a significant force to extend the Seleucid Empire’s influence and consolidate his control over the territories.

Overflowing and Passing Through:The prophecy states that one of the sons, Antiochus Epiphanes, would come with his forces, overflow, and pass through. This refers to his military campaigns, especially the invasion of Egypt. Antiochus waged several campaigns against Egypt to assert his dominance over the Ptolemaic Empire.

Returning and Being Stirred Up to His Fortress:The verse concludes by mentioning Antiochus Epiphanes returning and being stirred up to his fortress. After the initial victories in Egypt, Antiochus faced resistance and had to retreat. He eventually returned to his base of operations and fortified himself in Antioch, the capital of the Seleucid Empire. From there, he launched further military campaigns and carried out various actions against the Jewish people.

Fulfillment and Symbolism:The events described in Daniel 11:10 were accurately fulfilled in history. Antiochus Epiphanes played a significant role in the conflicts between the Seleucid and Ptolemaic kingdoms. The prophecy serves as a testament to the accuracy of Daniel’s visions and the sovereignty of God over historical events.
