Daniel 12:11

Posted on 18 May at 14:10

“And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days.”

Context:To understand Daniel 12:11 better, it’s important to consider the context of the entire chapter. Daniel 12 is the concluding chapter of the Book of Daniel and contains the final prophecy given to Daniel concerning the end times and the resurrection.

Time Period:The verse mentions a specific time period of “a thousand two hundred and ninety days.” In biblical prophecy, prophetic days are often interpreted as years. Therefore, this time period could refer to 1,290 literal years.

Daily Sacrifice and the Abomination of Desolation:The verse refers to the cessation of the “daily sacrifice” and the setting up of the “abomination that maketh desolate.” These references are linked to the events predicted in Daniel 9:27 and mentioned by Jesus in Matthew 24:15. The abomination of desolation is a term used to describe a sacrilegious act or object that defiles the holy place, often associated with the Antichrist.

Fulfillment:Various interpretations exist regarding the fulfillment of this prophecy. One view suggests that the time period of 1,290 years began with the desecration of the Jewish temple by the Roman Emperor Titus in AD 70 and ended in AD 1360. Another interpretation suggests that the time period could refer to the reign of the Antichrist and the events surrounding the end times.

Symbolism:It is important to note that apocalyptic prophecies, such as those found in the book of Daniel, often contain symbolic language. While some elements of these prophecies can be interpreted more literally, other aspects may require a more symbolic or metaphorical understanding.

Application:As with any biblical prophecy, it is crucial to approach it with humility and a recognition that our understanding may be limited. While it is beneficial to study and reflect on these prophecies, our primary focus as Christians should be on living out our faith, seeking a relationship with God, and following the teachings of Jesus Christ. Remember that biblical interpretation can vary among individuals and denominations. It is advisable to consult various scholarly resources and seek guidance from trusted spiritual leaders for a more comprehensive understanding of Daniel 12:11 and its implications.
