Daniel 11:45

Posted on 18 May at 14:10

“But he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.”

Daniel 11:45 is the concluding verse of a prophecy given by the angel to Daniel concerning future events and the rise and fall of various kingdoms and rulers. It is a challenging passage to interpret, and different scholars have presented different understandings of its meaning. Let’s explore some of the common interpretations:

Historical Interpretation:Some scholars believe that the events described in Daniel 11:45 were fulfilled in the historical context of the Old Testament period. They suggest that the “he” in this verse refers to Antiochus IV Epiphanes, a Seleucid king who persecuted the Jews during the intertestamental period. According to this view, the phrase “plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain” refers to Antiochus setting up idols and desecrating the temple in Jerusalem.

Dual Fulfillment Interpretation:Others propose that Daniel 11:45 has both a historical and a future fulfillment. They suggest that while Antiochus fulfilled this prophecy partially, there is also an end‑times fulfillment yet to come. In this view, the “he” in the verse may represent a future antichrist figure who will arise and desecrate a rebuilt temple in Jerusalem during the last days.

Symbolic Interpretation:Some scholars take a symbolic approach to this verse. They argue that the events described in Daniel 11:45 are not meant to be understood literally but represent broader spiritual themes. According to this view, the verse symbolizes the ultimate defeat and judgment of evil powers by God. The “he” may refer to any oppressive ruler, and the “glorious holy mountain” could represent the dwelling place of God or the spiritual kingdom of God.

It is important to note that the book of Daniel contains apocalyptic literature, which often uses symbolic language and images to convey its message. As such, interpreting specific details can be challenging and may require careful consideration of the historical context, parallel passages, and other biblical references. Ultimately, the exact interpretation of Daniel 11:45 remains a matter of debate, and different scholars and theologians may hold varying views. As you study this verse further, I encourage you to consult various commentaries and resources to gain a more comprehensive understanding of its meaning within the broader context of the book of Daniel and the Bible as a whole.
