Daniel 12:1
And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.
Daniel 12:1 (KJV)
Context
The book of Daniel contains prophecies given to the prophet during the Babylonian exile. This final chapter reveals end-time events, and this verse concludes the vision by focusing on deliverance and the book of life.
Meaning
The verse begins with “and at that time,” linking it to preceding prophecies and pointing to a specific future period. Michael, “the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people,” is an archangel and protector of God’s people; his standing up indicates active intervention on their behalf.
The verse describes “a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time,” often associated with the Great Tribulation. Yet in that same time, “thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.” This deliverance is not universal but specific to those whose names are recorded in God’s book, often understood as the Book of Life.
Biblical connections
The “book” echoes Exodus 32:32-33 and Psalm 69:28, where God records the names of His people. The “time of trouble” parallels Jeremiah 30:7, called “the time of Jacob’s trouble.” These connections reinforce the certainty of God’s sovereign plan and the security of those written in His book.
Application
This verse encourages believers to trust in God during trouble and uncertainty, reminding us that God is in control and will ultimately deliver His people. It emphasizes the importance of having our names written in the Book of Life through faith in Jesus Christ.
Reflection
Even in the darkest hour, God’s people are secure in His plan. The promise of deliverance is not a promise of ease, but a guarantee of final salvation for those who belong to Him. This hope calls us to persevere and remain faithful, knowing that our names are held securely in God’s eternal record.
