Hosea 2:18
And in that day will I make a couenant for them with the beasts of the field, and with the foules of heauen, and with the creeping things of the ground: and I will breake the bow and the sword, and the battell out of the earth, and will make them to lie downe safely. Hosea 2:18 (KJV)
Hosea 2:18 belongs to the prophetic book of Hosea, written during a period when the northern kingdom of Israel had turned away from God and embraced idolatry. The prophet was called to deliver both warning and hope to a people whose spiritual infidelity was illustrated through the picture of his own troubled marriage to Gomer. In the verses that precede 2:18, God’s discipline upon Israel is described, yet even amid judgment a promise of future restoration shines through.
The verse itself declares that God will establish a covenant not only with His people but also with the beasts of the field, the fowls of heaven, and the creeping things of the ground. This vivid imagery points to a renewal of harmony throughout creation. The promise that God will “break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the earth” symbolizes the complete cessation of violence and warfare, ushering in a universal state of peace.
Furthermore, the assurance that God will make His people “lie down safely” conveys deep security and rest. When the covenant is fulfilled and conflict is removed, the people will experience true safety and tranquility.
The passage therefore carries a powerful message of hope. It reminds believers of God’s unwavering faithfulness, His desire to reconcile all of creation to Himself, and His ultimate plan for peace. For Christians, the verse also resonates with the work of Jesus Christ, whose death and resurrection inaugurated a new covenant of forgiveness, redemption, and reconciliation. That covenant points forward to the ultimate fulfillment of Hosea’s promise when every part of creation rests in harmony with God.
In summary, Hosea 2:18 proclaims a future where God’s covenant restores harmony among all creatures, ends all warfare, and grants His people lasting safety—a profound testament to divine faithfulness and the ultimate peace that awaits believers.
