Hosea 2:18

And in that day will I make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven, and with the creeping things of the ground: and I will break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the earth, and will make them to lie down safely.

Hosea 2:18 (KJV)

Hosea 2:18 belongs to the prophetic book of Hosea, written when the northern kingdom of Israel had turned from God to idolatry. The prophet’s troubled marriage to Gomer illustrated Israel’s spiritual unfaithfulness. In the surrounding verses, God describes His discipline upon Israel, yet even amid judgment a promise of future restoration shines through.

The verse declares that God will make a covenant not only with His people but also with the beasts of the field, the fowls of heaven, and the creeping things of the ground. This vivid imagery points to a renewal of harmony throughout creation, reversing the enmity that entered the world through sin. The promise that God will “break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the earth” symbolizes the complete cessation of violence and warfare, ushering in a universal state of peace. The assurance that God will make His people “lie down safely” conveys deep security and rest; when conflict is removed, they will experience true tranquility.

This promise is part of a larger passage where God speaks of betrothing Israel to Himself in righteousness, justice, steadfast love, and mercy. The covenant extending to the animal creation echoes the peace of Eden and points to the messianic age when harmony will be fully realized. The New Testament connects such peace to Christ, who reconciles all things to God (Ephesians 2:14-17; Colossians 1:20).

For believers, this verse is a powerful reminder of God’s unwavering faithfulness and His desire to reconcile all creation to Himself. It calls us to trust in God’s power to bring peace and safety, and to respond with faith and obedience, knowing that His covenant promises are reliable.

Hosea 2:18 proclaims a future where God’s covenant restores harmony among all creatures, ends all warfare, and grants His people lasting safety—a profound testament to divine faithfulness and the ultimate peace that awaits believers.
