Hosea 12:3

“He took his brother by the heel in the womb, and by his strength he had power with God”

Context:The book of Hosea is one of the prophetic books in the Old Testament. It contains the prophecies of the prophet Hosea, who was called by God to deliver messages to the people of Israel. The book addresses Israel’s unfaithfulness to God and the consequences they would face as a result.

Historical Background:In this verse, Hosea references the story of Jacob (also known as Israel) from the book of Genesis. Jacob, whose name means “heel-catcher” or “supplanter,” was born holding onto the heel of his twin brother, Esau (Genesis 25:26). This act of grasping his brother’s heel in the womb symbolises Jacob’s cunning nature and his desire to gain an advantage.

Symbolic Meaning:The phrase “by his strength he had power with God” refers to Jacob’s encounter with God at the Jabbok River in Genesis 32:22-32. Before reuniting with his brother Esau, Jacob wrestled with a mysterious man throughout the night. During this wrestling match, Jacob refused to let go until he received a blessing from the man. In the end, the man blessed Jacob, changed his name to Israel, and Jacob recognised that he had encountered God.

Lessons from Hosea 12:3:

• Perseverance:Jacob’s wrestling with God symbolises the importance of perseverance in our relationship with Him. Jacob refused to let go until he received God’s blessing, demonstrating his determination and faithfulness. As believers, we should also persistently seek God, not giving up when faced with challenges or difficulties.
• Trusting in God’s Strength:Jacob’s encounter with God highlights the fact that our strength comes from God alone. Despite his cunning and strategies, Jacob recognised that his ultimate power and success were derived from his relationship with God. Similarly, we should rely on God’s strength rather than our own abilities, acknowledging that true power comes from Him.

Application:

• Seek God diligently:Hosea 12:3 encourages us to seek God with fervency and determination. Just as Jacob wrestled all night, we should be willing to invest time and effort in our relationship with God, knowing that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him (Hebrews 11:6).
• Depend on God’s strength:Instead of relying solely on our own strength and abilities, we should trust in God’s power and seek His guidance in every aspect of our lives. As the apostle Paul stated, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).
• Embrace transformation:Like Jacob, we need to be open to the transformative work of God in our lives. This involves surrendering our will, allowing God to shape our character, and yielding to His plans and purposes for us. As we grow in our relationship with Him, we will experience personal transformation and become more aligned with His desires.
