Joel 1:3

Listen to this article

“Tell ye your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children another generation.”

Context:The book of Joel is one of the Minor Prophets in the Old Testament. It was written by the prophet Joel during a time of great devastation in Judah, likely around the 9th century BC. The book addresses a severe locust plague that had devastated the land and calls the people to repentance and restoration.

Generational Responsibility:In Joel 1:3, the prophet urges the people to pass on the knowledge of the devastation caused by the locust plague to future generations. This verse emphasises the importance of passing down the knowledge of God’s works and His judgments to subsequent generations. The idea is that the experiences and lessons learned by one generation should be communicated to the next.

Teaching the Children:The verse highlights the responsibility of parents to instruct their children about God’s acts and His ways. Parents are encouraged to share stories of God’s deliverance, judgment, and faithfulness, as well as the consequences of disobedience. By doing so, they equip their children to understand God’s character and His dealings with humanity.

Passing Down the Faith:God desires that the knowledge of Him and His works continues from one generation to the next. Each generation has the responsibility to teach the next generation about God’s faithfulness, His commandments, and His salvation. This ensures the continuity of faith and helps children develop a personal relationship with God.

Application:As believers today, we can learn from Joel 1:3 by recognising our responsibility to pass on the knowledge of God to future generations. We can do this by sharing our testimonies, teaching the Bible, and modelling a godly life for our children and the younger ones in our community. By doing so, we participate in God’s plan to reveal Himself to successive generations and equip them to walk in His ways.

  • Overall, Joel 1:3 reminds us of the importance of intergenerational discipleship, where we actively teach and mentor those who come after us in the ways of the Lord. By faithfully passing down the knowledge of God, we contribute to the growth and development of future generations in their relationship with Him.
