Joel 1:1

Posted on 18 May at 14:54
Listen to this article

“The word of the LORD that came to Joel the son of Pethuel.”

Background and Context:The book of Joel is one of the minor prophets in the Old Testament. It is named after the prophet Joel, who is the author of this book. However, not much is known about Joel’s personal background or the specific timeframe in which he prophesied. The book of Joel focuses on themes of judgment, repentance, restoration, and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

The Word of the LORD:The verse begins by emphasising that the message being conveyed is “the word of the LORD.” This indicates that the following words are not merely the thoughts or ideas of Joel but rather a divine message that he received from God. The phrase “the word of the LORD” highlights the authority and significance of the message being delivered.

Joel the Son of Pethuel:Joel is identified as the prophet to whom this word from the Lord came. He is referred to as “the son of Pethuel.” The mention of his father’s name signifies his lineage or family background. Unfortunately, there is limited information available about Joel or his father Pethuel in the biblical text. Nevertheless, what is important is that God chose Joel as a vessel to convey His message to His people.

Key Takeaways:

  • The verse establishes the divine origin and authority of the message Joel is about to deliver.
  • The book of Joel addresses issues of judgment, repentance, restoration, and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
  • Although details about Joel and his father are scarce, what matters is that Joel was chosen by God to be His messenger.

Application:

  • As we reflect on Joel 1:1, we can be reminded of the importance of God’s word in our lives. Just as God spoke to Joel and entrusted him with a message for His people, God continues to speak to us through His written Word, the Bible. It is essential to approach Scripture with reverence, recognising that it is the inspired Word of God, capable of guiding, correcting, and instructing us.

Furthermore, we can also be encouraged that God can choose anyone to be His messenger. Regardless of our background or qualifications, God can use us for His purposes when we make ourselves available to Him. Let us be attentive to God’s voice, seeking to faithfully obey and proclaim His truth, just as Joel did.

Remember, this brief study is only an introduction to the verse, and further exploration of the entire book of Joel would provide deeper insights into God’s message and its application to our lives.
