Listen to this article

It is he that buildeth his stories in the heauen, and hath founded his troupe in the earth, he that calleth for the waters of the Sea, and powreth them out vpon the face of the earth: the Lord is his name. Amos 9:6 (KJV)

Historical Context: The book of Amos is set in the northern kingdom of Israel during the reign of Jeroboam II (8th century BC). Amos was a shepherd from the town of Tekoa whom God called to be a prophet to pronounce judgment on Israel for its social injustice, idolatry, and moral decay.

Heavenly and Earthly Foundations: In this verse, Amos declares that it is God who builds His “stories” in the heaven and establishes His “troop” on the earth. This imagery emphasizes God’s sovereignty and creative power. The term “stories” can refer to the upper chambers or storehouses of the heavens, highlighting God’s control over the celestial realm. The “troop” can refer to God’s appointed order and governance on the earth, indicating His authority over all creation. In the same verse, Amos also declares that God builds the heavens “as a curtain” and spreads the earth over the waters. The image of a curtain suggests the vast, protective covering of the sky, while the spreading of the earth upon the waters emphasizes God’s sovereign ordering of creation.

God’s Power over Creation: The verse continues by describing God’s control over natural elements. God is depicted as the one who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out upon the face of the earth. This imagery signifies God’s authority over the water cycle and His ability to control the forces of nature. It highlights His power to bring both blessings and judgment upon the earth. The verse also highlights God’s control over the fundamental elements of the world. By portraying the heavens as a curtain and the earth as laid upon the waters, the passage affirms God’s authority over the cosmos and His ability to shape the natural order.

The LORD is His Name: The verse concludes with the affirmation that “The LORD is his name.” This statement emphasizes that the God who has dominion over creation is none other than Yahweh, the covenant God of Israel. It reminds the readers that the same God who formed the heavens and the earth is the one who holds them together and exercises His authority over them.

Spiritual Application: Amos 9:6 reminds us of God’s supreme power and authority over all creation. It underscores the importance of recognizing God’s sovereignty and submitting to His governance. It also points to the fact that God is not a distant deity but intimately involved in the affairs of His creation. As believers, we can find comfort and assurance in knowing that the same God who created the heavens and the earth is the one who watches over us and cares for our needs.

In conclusion: Amos 9:6 portrays God as the sovereign ruler over the heavens and the earth, demonstrating His creative power and control over the forces of nature. It reminds us to acknowledge God’s authority and trust in His providence.
