Nahum 3:9

Posted on 18 May at 14:53
Listen to this article

“Ethiopia and Egypt were her strength, and it was infinite; Put and Lubim were thy helpers.”

Context:The book of Nahum is one of the minor prophets in the Old Testament, and it focuses on the prophecy of Nineveh’s destruction. Nahum’s prophecy declares God’s judgment on the city for its wickedness and cruelty. In Nahum 3:9, the verse describes the allies and supporters of Nineveh, namely Ethiopia, Egypt, Put, and Lubim.

Ethiopia and Egypt:These nations were known for their military might and strategic alliances. Egypt was a powerful nation in the ancient world, and Ethiopia (also referred to as Cush in some translations) had a reputation for strong armies. Together, they provided strength and support to Nineveh.

Put and Lubim:Put and Lubim were likely regions or peoples associated with Libya. They were also counted among the allies of Nineveh, offering their assistance and support.

Symbolic meaning:Beyond the historical context, this verse can also hold symbolic significance. In the broader biblical narrative, Egypt often symbolises worldly power, wealth, and human reliance. Ethiopia represents strength and might. Put and Lubim may represent other nations or powers aligned with Nineveh.

Divine judgment:Despite the strength and support from these nations, Nineveh ultimately faced God’s judgment. Nahum’s prophecy emphasises that no matter how strong or influential a nation may be, God’s judgment will prevail. The verse foreshadows the downfall of Nineveh and serves as a reminder that earthly alliances and powers cannot withstand the sovereignty of God.

  • In conclusion:Nahum 3:9 portrays the allies and supporters of Nineveh, highlighting their strength and assistance. However, this verse also underscores the ultimate futility of earthly powers when faced with the judgment of God.
