Nahum 3:9

Ethiopia and Egypt were her strength, and it was infinite; Put and Lubim were thy helpers.

Nahum 3:9 (KJV)

Nahum prophesied against Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian Empire, declaring God’s judgment for its wickedness and cruelty. In this verse, the prophet names the allies and sources of strength that Nineveh relied upon: Ethiopia, Egypt, Put, and Lubim.

Ethiopia (Cush) and Egypt were renowned for military might and strategic alliances. Their support is described as “infinite,” meaning there was no end to it, emphasizing the vastness of Nineveh’s resources. Put and Lubim are generally identified with regions in North Africa, likely Libya and neighboring territories, and they served as auxiliary helpers.

Despite this formidable coalition, the following verse records that Nineveh was carried away into captivity. Human alliances and military strength cannot withstand divine judgment. Only God is truly infinite; human power is finite and subject to His sovereign will.

In the broader biblical narrative, Egypt often symbolizes worldly power, wealth, and human reliance, while Ethiopia represents strength and might. Put and Lubim may represent other nations or powers aligned with Nineveh. The mention of these African nations shows the extent of Nineveh’s influence, yet it also illustrates the futility of relying on such alliances.

This verse warns against trusting in earthly resources rather than in the Lord. For the believer, the application is to place confidence in God alone, not in human strength or political alliances. It reminds us that God sees the pride of nations and will humble them, and it calls for humility and dependence on God rather than on worldly resources.

Nahum 3:9 portrays the allies and supporters of Nineveh, highlighting their strength and assistance. However, this verse also underscores the ultimate futility of earthly powers when faced with the judgment of God. No matter how strong or influential a nation may be, God’s judgment will prevail.
