Listen to this article

“Before the decree bring forth, before the day pass as the chaff, before the fierce anger of the LORD come upon you, before the day of the LORD’S anger come upon you.”

Context:Zephaniah was a prophet who delivered a message from God to the people of Judah during the reign of King Josiah. The book of Zephaniah primarily focuses on the impending judgment of God upon Judah and the nations surrounding them due to their idolatry, injustice, and rebellion against God’s commands.

Urgency for Repentance:In this verse, Zephaniah urges the people to seek the Lord and repent before it is too late. The language used emphasises the urgency of the situation. The phrase “before the decree bring forth” suggests that God’s judgment is imminent and will soon be executed. It signifies the urgency for the people to turn to God before it is too late.

Day of the Lord:Zephaniah mentions “the day of the LORD’S anger” which refers to the time when God would execute His judgment upon the wicked. The phrase “before the day pass as the chaff” portrays the brevity and transience of human life in comparison to the eternal nature of God’s judgment. It indicates that there is a limited time for repentance and the opportunity should not be wasted.

Application:Zephaniah’s message is relevant not only to the people of Judah in his time but also to believers today. It serves as a reminder that God is just and will eventually bring judgment upon those who persist in sin and rebellion. It encourages us to examine our lives and repent of any wrongdoing, seeking a genuine relationship with God.

  • Repentance and Salvation:Zephaniah’s call for repentance demonstrates God’s mercy and grace. Despite the impending judgment, God provides an opportunity for the people to turn back to Him, demonstrating His desire for their salvation. The verse emphasises the importance of seeking God wholeheartedly, acknowledging our need for forgiveness and restoration through genuine repentance.
