Zephaniah 2:3
“Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the LORD’S anger.”
Context:The book of Zephaniah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament. The prophet Zephaniah delivered a message from God to the people of Judah during the reign of King Josiah. The main theme of the book is the impending judgement and the call to repentance.
Seeking the Lord:The verse begins with a call to seek the Lord. “Seek ye the LORD” emphasizes the importance of actively pursuing a relationship with God. It involves a genuine desire to know and follow Him, to seek His guidance, and to align one’s life with His will.
The Meek of the Earth:The invitation to seek the Lord is specifically addressed to the “meek of the earth.” The meek are those who are humble, gentle, and submissive to God. They recognize their dependence on Him and are willing to surrender their own desires and ambitions to follow His ways.
Wrought His Judgment:The meek of the earth are described as those who have “wrought his judgment.” This means that they have carried out God’s righteous judgements, following His commandments and living according to His principles. They have embraced God’s standards of justice and righteousness in their lives.
Seeking Righteousness and Meekness:The verse further instructs the meek to “seek righteousness” and “seek meekness.” Seeking righteousness involves pursuing a life of moral integrity and conformity to God’s standards. It means actively seeking to do what is right and just in God’s eyes. Seeking meekness refers to cultivating humility and gentleness, both in our relationship with God and with others.
Hiding in the Day of the Lord’s Anger:The verse concludes with the hopeful expectation that by seeking the Lord, righteousness, and meekness, the meek of the earth may find refuge and be hidden in the day of the Lord’s anger. This refers to the coming judgement and the need for God’s people to be protected from His wrath. By seeking the Lord and living in accordance with His ways, they may find safety and shelter from the divine judgement that is to come.
Overall, Zephaniah 2:3 serves as a call to all humble and righteous people to seek the Lord, pursue righteousness and meekness, and find refuge in Him in the face of impending judgement. It emphasises the importance of an active relationship with God and a life that aligns with His will.
