Listen to this article

“Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and to the residue of the people, saying,”

Context:The book of Haggai is one of the twelve Minor Prophets in the Old Testament. Haggai prophesied during the time of the Jewish exiles who had returned from Babylon to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple after the Babylonian captivity. The people faced opposition and had become discouraged in their work. Haggai was sent by God to encourage them and urge them to prioritise the rebuilding of the temple.

Recipients of the message:In Haggai 2:2, God instructs Haggai to speak to three specific individuals: Zerubbabel, the governor of Judah; Joshua, the high priest; and the residue or remnant of the people. These were the key leaders responsible for leading and motivating the people in their task.

Importance of the message:By addressing these leaders, God intended to convey His message to the people as a whole. Zerubbabel and Joshua held significant roles in the community, representing both the political and spiritual aspects. The remnant of the people referred to the entire community of Israelites involved in the temple reconstruction. God wanted His message to reach everyone and provide encouragement and direction.

God’s instruction:The verse begins with “Speak now.” It signifies the urgency and immediacy with which God wanted Haggai to convey His message. The phrase emphasises the need for immediate action and attention to the message that follows.

Application:While this verse specifically addresses the historical context of rebuilding the temple, we can derive some principles and lessons from it for our lives today. It highlights the importance of effective leadership, both in the secular and spiritual realms. It emphasises the significance of God’s message reaching all members of the community. It also reminds us of the importance of prompt obedience to God’s instructions.

  • In summary, Haggai 2:2 is a call from God to the leaders and people of Israel, urging them to listen to His message through the prophet Haggai. It carries lessons on leadership, community involvement, and prompt obedience to God’s instructions.
