Zechariah 1:9

Then said I, O my lord, what are these? And the angel that talked with me said unto me, I will shew thee what these be.

Zechariah 1:9 (KJV)

Zechariah ministered after the Israelites returned from Babylonian captivity. In this verse he is in the midst of a series of night visions, having just seen horses of different colors (Zechariah 1:8). Puzzled by the sight, he asks the angel who is speaking with him about what he has witnessed.

Zechariah’s question, “O my lord, what are these?” reveals his humility and desire to understand. He does not pretend to grasp the vision on his own but acknowledges his limited understanding and seeks guidance. The angel’s reply, “I will shew thee what these be,” is a direct promise of explanation, emphasizing the angel’s role as a messenger and revealer of divine mysteries. This exchange establishes a pattern for the entire vision sequence: Zechariah asks questions, and the interpreting angel provides divine explanation.

The angel’s promise is fulfilled in the following verses, where the horses are explained as those whom the Lord has sent to walk to and fro through the earth (Zechariah 1:10-11). This verse is a hinge in the vision: it moves from the prophet’s perplexity to divine disclosure, teaching that God does not leave His people in confusion but provides clarity through His word and messengers. The Hebrew term for “lord” used here is “adoni,” a respectful title, and the angel is described as “the angel that talked with me,” emphasizing ongoing communication.

Zechariah 1:9 teaches the importance of seeking divine guidance and understanding when faced with spiritual mysteries. It encourages believers to approach God with humility, acknowledging their limited understanding, and relying on Him to provide insight and wisdom. The verse models the proper posture of a believer: asking God for understanding and receiving His revelation with humility. It also encourages prayerful inquiry into Scripture and trust that God reveals truth to those who seek it.

As the subsequent verses in Zechariah 1 show, the angel proceeds to explain the vision to Zechariah, revealing significant messages and prophecies. This passage serves as a reminder that God desires to reveal His plans and purposes to His people and that seeking understanding from Him is essential.
