Zechariah 1:13

And the Lord answered the angel that talked with me with good words and comfortable words.

Zechariah 1:13 (KJV)

Zechariah 1:13 stands within a night vision recorded in Zechariah 1:7-17. The prophet sees a man on a red horse among myrtle trees, with other horses behind him. These horses are sent by the Lord to patrol the earth and report on its condition. In the preceding verse, the angel of the Lord intercedes, asking how long God’s mercy will delay in restoring Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, which have lain in ruins for seventy years. Verse 13 records the divine response: the Lord answers with “good words and comfortable words.”

The Hebrew words behind “good” and “comfortable” convey graciousness and consolation. God’s answer is not a rebuke but a message of encouragement and reassurance. Notably, the response is given to the angel who talked with Zechariah, showing a chain of divine communication: the Lord speaks to the angel, and the angel conveys the message to the prophet. This highlights God’s willingness to use messengers to bring comfort to His people.

The comforting response sets the stage for the following verses, where the Lord declares His jealousy for Jerusalem and His intention to return to it with mercies (Zechariah 1:14-17). This pattern of divine comfort after a period of judgment echoes the broader prophetic message of restoration found throughout the Old Testament, such as in Isaiah 40:1-2, where God commands His people to be comforted. The verse also demonstrates that God answers the intercession of His messengers with good tidings, revealing His propitious disposition toward His people even when His help is not immediate.

In moments of uncertainty or distress, believers can turn to Scripture for guidance, wisdom, and comfort. This verse reminds us that God provides encouraging words that can steady us when we face trials, and that His messengers—whether angels or the prophetic voice—communicate His caring presence. The passage also underscores God’s faithfulness in answering the prayers of His people. The comforting response reveals His willingness to guide His servants and to communicate through His messengers, confirming His steadfast love.

Finally, the verse calls us to trust in God’s promises. Even when doubts arise, we can rely on the assurance that God is with us, offering encouragement through His Word and through the faithful proclamation of His servants. Zechariah 1:13 showcases a divine response of comfort and encouragement, inviting believers to seek solace, guidance, and confidence in the steadfast promises of the Lord.
