Zechariah 3:4
And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment.
Zechariah 3:4 (KJV)
Context
The book of Zechariah contains a series of visions given to encourage the post-exilic community of Israel as they rebuilt Jerusalem and the temple after the Babylonian exile. In Zechariah 3, the prophet sees Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, with Satan present to accuse him. Joshua represents the people, and his filthy garments symbolise the sin and guilt of the nation.
Meaning
The angel of the Lord commands those standing before him to take away Joshua’s filthy garments. This action represents the removal of sin and guilt from Joshua and the people of Israel, signifying God’s forgiveness and cleansing. The divine proclamation follows: “Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment.” God declares that He has taken away Joshua’s iniquity and will provide him with clean garments, demonstrating His grace and acceptance.
The change of raiment symbolises righteousness, purity, and the restoration of honour. Through this act, God not only forgives the sins of His people but also clothes them with His righteousness, covering their shame and presenting them as blameless before Him. The certainty of the declaration emphasises the completeness of God’s pardon.
Biblical connections
Zechariah 3:4 points to the redemptive work of God, foreshadowing the ultimate cleansing from sin that comes through Jesus Christ. In the New Testament, Jesus is our High Priest, who cleanses us from sin through His sacrifice on the cross. We receive forgiveness, and He clothes us with His righteousness, enabling us to stand blameless before God.
Application
This verse brings encouragement to believers. It reminds us that no matter how sinful or guilty we may feel, God offers forgiveness and a fresh start. He removes our filthy garments of sin and replaces them with the robe of His righteousness. It is a reminder that we are accepted, loved, and restored in Him.
Zechariah 3:4 speaks of God’s grace, forgiveness, and His desire to restore and transform His people. It is a powerful reminder of the cleansing and righteousness that come through faith in Jesus Christ.
