Zechariah 3:7
Thus saith the Lord of hosts; If thou wilt walk in my ways, and if thou wilt keep my charge, then thou shalt also judge my house, and shalt also keep my courts, and I will give thee places to walk among these that stand by.
Zechariah 3:7 (KJV)
Context
Zechariah delivered this message to the Israelites after their return from Babylonian exile, while the temple in Jerusalem was being rebuilt amid challenges and opposition. In the vision recorded in Zechariah 3, Joshua the high priest stands before the angel of the Lord in filthy garments, symbolizing the sinfulness of Joshua and the nation. The Lord removes Joshua’s iniquity and clothes him with clean garments, picturing forgiveness, grace, and redemption. Verse 7 then records the Lord of hosts speaking directly to Joshua, establishing a conditional promise based on faithful obedience.
Meaning
The title “Lord of hosts” emphasizes God’s absolute sovereignty and power as commander of the heavenly armies. God sets forth two conditions for Joshua: walking in His ways and keeping His charge. “Walking in His ways” means living a life of obedience, righteousness, and faithfulness to God’s commandments. “Keeping His charge” refers to faithfully carrying out the responsibilities and duties entrusted to Joshua as high priest, including the careful performance of priestly service.
If Joshua fulfills these conditions, God promises three blessings. First, Joshua will be given authority to judge God’s house, indicating a role in administering justice and leading the people in worship and spiritual affairs. Second, he will be entrusted with keeping God’s courts, which refers to the temple and its associated services. Third, God will give Joshua places to walk among those who stand by Him, signifying honor, favor, and participation in divine counsel—access to God’s presence and fellowship with the heavenly council.
The conditional nature of the promise underscores the importance of sustained obedience, not merely initial cleansing. The rewards are not earned but are gracious grants from God in response to faithful stewardship.
Biblical connections
This verse connects the restoration of the priesthood with the rebuilding of the temple and the renewal of the community’s commitment to God. The promise of access among those standing by points to the privilege of standing in God’s presence, a theme that finds its ultimate fulfillment in Christ, who as our great High Priest secures our access to the Father.
Application
While this verse was originally directed to Joshua, believers today can draw principles from it. It emphasizes the importance of obedience and faithfulness to God’s ways and the responsibilities He has given us. When we are faithful in carrying out our duties and walking in obedience, God blesses us and entrusts us with greater responsibilities in His Kingdom. Faithful obedience in our God-given responsibilities leads to deeper fellowship with God and greater usefulness in His service. The “places to walk” can be understood as the freedom and confidence to move in God’s presence, a privilege granted to those who faithfully serve Him.
Reflection
Zechariah 3:7 encourages Joshua, the high priest, to walk in God’s ways and keep His charge, promising him authority, responsibility, and divine favor. This verse also teaches us about the importance of obedience, faithfulness, and the blessings that come when we align our lives with God’s will. It reminds us that God’s grace not only cleanses us but also calls us into faithful service and intimate fellowship with Him.
