Zechariah 4:14
Then said he; These are the two annointed ones, that stand by the Lord of the whole earth. Zechariah 4:14 (KJV)
The verse is part of a striking vision given to the prophet Zechariah. In the vision Zechariah sees a golden lampstand with a bowl on top, seven lamps, and seven golden pipes feeding oil into the lamps. The lampstand symbolizes the source of divine light and represents God’s presence and guidance. Flanking the lampstand are two olive trees, the focus of this verse.
The term “anointed ones” in Hebrew is rendered as “beney ha‑yitzhar” or “b’nei ha‑tzemer” (בְּנֵי הַצֶּמֶר), which can be translated as “sons of oil,” even “sons of fresh oil.” In biblical culture anointing with oil signified consecration, empowerment, and commissioning for a specific task. Here the anointed ones refer to the two olive trees shown in the vision.
The olive trees play a crucial role. They stand on either side of the lampstand and are linked to it through the golden pipes. The angel explains that the trees represent “the two anointed ones who are standing by the Lord of the whole earth.” They act as channels or conduits for the divine oil that flows into the lamps, guaranteeing a continuous supply of light.
Symbolically, the golden lampstand stands for God’s presence and light, while the oil flowing from the olive trees signifies the ongoing supply of the Spirit’s anointing, wisdom, and power. The two anointed ones, standing by the Lord, represent God’s chosen instruments, appointed to carry out His work and fulfill His purposes on earth.
The phrase “Lord of the whole earth” underscores the universal sovereignty of God. It highlights that the work of the anointed ones extends beyond any single nation or community. Empowered by the Spirit, they are entrusted with tasks that have a global impact, demonstrating God’s power working through His vessels to accomplish His divine plan on a broader scale.
In summary, Zechariah 4:14 emphasizes the two olive trees as the anointed ones—God’s chosen servants, empowered by the Spirit, standing by the Lord of the whole earth. They serve as conduits for the divine oil, ensuring a continuous flow of God’s anointing, wisdom, and power to accomplish His purposes universally. This verse reminds believers of God’s sovereign rule, His empowerment of chosen servants, and their role in fulfilling His divine plan.
