Zechariah 6:8

Listen to this article

“Then cried he upon me, and spake unto me, saying, Behold, these that go toward the north country have quieted my spirit in the north country.”

Context:Before diving into Zechariah 6:8, it’s important to understand the context of the verse. The book of Zechariah is one of the prophetic books in the Old Testament. It was written by the prophet Zechariah during the post-exilic period when the Israelites had returned from Babylonian captivity to rebuild Jerusalem and the temple.

Symbolic vision:Zechariah 6:1-8 records a series of visions that the prophet Zechariah received. In this particular vision, he sees four chariots coming out from between two bronze mountains. Each chariot is pulled by different-coloured horses. The colours of the horses represent the spirits sent by God to patrol the earth.

The focus on the north country:In Zechariah 6:8, the attention shifts to the horses that are going toward the north country. The north country likely refers to Babylon, the land of their previous captivity. The verse indicates that these horses have “quieted my spirit in the north country.” This can be understood as God’s assurance that He has dealt with the oppression and captivity of His people in the north country.

God’s presence and sovereignty:Through this vision, God is revealing His presence and sovereignty over the nations. The horses and chariots symbolise God’s watchful eye over the earth and His control over the course of history. The fact that God’s spirit is quieted in the north country signifies that His justice has been accomplished and His people have been liberated.
