Zechariah 6:12

Listen to this article

“And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD.”

Historical Context:The book of Zechariah was written during the time of the Israelites’ return from exile in Babylon. It was a period of restoration for Jerusalem and the temple, and Zechariah was a prophet who encouraged the people to rebuild and renew their relationship with God.

Symbolic Language:Zechariah 6:12 contains a prophecy that uses symbolic language. The verse refers to a man whose name is “The BRANCH.” This symbolic language is used to represent the coming Messiah, who will fulfill specific roles and accomplish significant tasks.

Messianic Prophecy:“The BRANCH” is a Messianic title found in other portions of the Old Testament as well, including Isaiah 11:1 and Jeremiah 23:5. The BRANCH represents the promised Messiah, who will come to bring salvation and establish God’s kingdom.

The Promised Messiah:In Zechariah 6:12, the verse speaks of the BRANCH growing up out of his place. This indicates the Messiah’s humble beginnings, as he would come from an unexpected or lowly origin. Despite this, he would rise to fulfill his divine mission.

The Temple of the LORD:The verse further states that the BRANCH would build the temple of the LORD. This statement has both a literal and symbolic meaning. On a literal level, it refers to the restoration and rebuilding of the physical temple in Jerusalem. Symbolically, it points to the Messiah’s role in establishing the spiritual temple-the people of God, the Church-who would be united under his leadership.

Fulfillment in Jesus Christ:The prophecy in Zechariah 6:12 finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ. Jesus, the promised Messiah, was born in humble circumstances in Bethlehem. He grew up in Nazareth, a small town, and embarked on his mission to redeem humanity.

Building the Temple:Jesus, through his life, death, and resurrection, accomplished the ultimate work of building the temple of the Lord. He established a new covenant and united believers as the body of Christ. In Ephesians 2:19-22, the Apostle Paul speaks of believers being built together as a spiritual temple in Christ.

Significance for Believers:Zechariah 6:12 reminds believers of the fulfillment of God’s promises through Jesus Christ. It emphasizes the humility of the Messiah’s birth, his redemptive work, and his role in uniting believers as the spiritual temple. It inspires believers to place their trust in Jesus and participate in the ongoing work of building God’s kingdom.
