Zechariah 6:11

Posted on 18 May at 14:14

“Then take silver and gold, and make crowns, and set them upon the head of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest.”

In this verse, the prophet Zechariah receives a divine instruction to take silver and gold and make crowns. These crowns are to be placed upon the head of Joshua, the son of Josedech, who serves as the high priest. To understand the significance of this verse, let’s explore the context and the broader themes in the book of Zechariah.

The book of Zechariah was written during a time of restoration for the Israelites. The people of Judah had returned from exile in Babylon and were working to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem. Zechariah, along with the prophet Haggai, encouraged and exhorted the people to complete the task of rebuilding the temple and renew their commitment to God.

In Zechariah’s visions and prophecies, he often used symbolic imagery to convey spiritual truths and provide encouragement to the people. In Zechariah 6:11, the crowns made of silver and gold represent honour, authority, and royal status. By placing the crowns upon Joshua’s head, God symbolically affirms and acknowledges his high priestly role and authority.

Joshua the high priest serves as a foreshadowing of Jesus Christ, who would come as both the ultimate high priest and the long‑awaited Messiah. The crowns given to Joshua foreshadow the future reign of Jesus as both the King of Kings and the Great High Priest.

Additionally, the act of placing the crowns on Joshua’s head serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness and fulfilment of His promises. It signifies the restoration of the priesthood and the establishment of a renewed covenant relationship with the people of Israel.

The significance of this verse extends beyond its immediate historical context. It points to the redemptive work of Jesus Christ, who would fulfil the requirements of the law and offer Himself as the perfect sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins. Jesus’ death and resurrection would open the way for all people, both Jews and Gentiles, to have access to God’s grace and salvation.

In summary, Zechariah 6:11 emphasises the divine recognition and authority bestowed upon Joshua, the high priest, through the symbolic act of placing crowns upon his head. It foreshadows the coming of Jesus Christ as the ultimate High Priest and Messiah, who would bring restoration, redemption, and salvation to all who believe in Him.
