Zechariah 7:4

“Then came the word of the Lord of hosts unto me, saying,”

Historical Context: Zechariah was a prophet during the time when the Jewish exiles were returning from Babylon to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple. This verse is part of a larger section (Zechariah 7:1-7) where the people of Bethel send messengers to the house of God to inquire about continuing certain religious practices they had observed during their time of mourning.

  • Seeking God’s Word:

In verse 4, Zechariah receives the word of the Lord of hosts. It implies that the people were seeking God’s guidance and wanted to know His will concerning their religious practices. They wanted to ensure that they were doing what was pleasing to God and following His commandments.

The Importance of God’s Word: This verse highlights the significance of God’s word in the lives of His people. The fact that the messengers came to Zechariah seeking the word of the Lord shows their recognition that the ultimate authority lies with God. They understood that His word held the key to their obedience and spiritual well-being.

The Title “Lord of hosts”: The phrase “Lord of hosts” emphasizes God’s sovereignty and power over all creation, including heavenly armies. By using this title, Zechariah acknowledges God’s authority and reminds the people that their inquiry should be directed to the highest authority in heaven and earth.

Application Today: As believers today, we can learn from this passage by recognizing the importance of seeking God’s word in all aspects of our lives. Just as the people of Bethel sought God’s guidance through Zechariah, we should seek God’s counsel through His Word, the Bible. It is through studying and meditating on His Word that we can understand His will for our lives and make choices that align with His desires.

We should also acknowledge God’s sovereignty and authority in our lives, just as Zechariah referred to Him as the “Lord of hosts.” By recognizing His lordship, we can humble ourselves before Him and submit our will to His divine plan.

In conclusion, Zechariah 7:4 reminds us to seek God’s word and recognize His authority in our lives. It teaches us the importance of aligning our actions and decisions with His will. Through prayer, studying the Scriptures, and seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we can ensure that we are walking in obedience and living according to God’s principles.
