Zechariah 7:4
Then came the word of the Lord of hosts unto me, saying,
Zechariah 7:4 (KJV)
Context
Zechariah ministered to the Jewish exiles who had returned from Babylon to rebuild the temple. In Zechariah 7:1-7, the people of Bethel sent messengers to the house of God to ask whether they should continue certain fasting practices from their years of mourning. Verse 4 records the beginning of God’s reply: the word of the Lord of hosts came to Zechariah, saying. This shows that the people were sincerely seeking divine guidance about their religious customs, and God responded to their inquiry with a direct message.
Meaning
The phrase “the word of the Lord of hosts came unto me” is a common prophetic formula in the Old Testament. It signifies that Zechariah was not speaking his own thoughts but was receiving a direct revelation from God. The message originated with God, not with human effort or imagination. The title “Lord of hosts” (Yahweh Sabaoth) portrays God as the supreme commander of heavenly armies, emphasizing His sovereignty, power, and authority over all creation. By using this title, Zechariah reminds the people that their inquiry should be directed to the highest authority in heaven and earth.
Biblical connections
This verse highlights the importance of God’s word in the lives of His people. The messengers came to Zechariah seeking the word of the Lord, recognizing that ultimate authority lies with God and that His word holds the key to obedience and spiritual well-being. The same prophetic formula appears throughout the Old Testament, underscoring that true prophetic revelation is initiated by God. This connects to the broader biblical principle that God responds to sincere inquiry with His word.
Application
As believers today, we can learn from this passage by recognizing the importance of seeking God’s word in all aspects of our lives. Just as the people of Bethel sought God’s guidance through Zechariah, we should seek God’s counsel through His Word, the Bible. Through studying and meditating on Scripture, we can understand His will and make choices that align with His desires. We should also acknowledge God’s sovereignty and authority in our lives, just as Zechariah referred to Him as the “Lord of hosts.” By recognizing His lordship, we can humble ourselves before Him and submit our will to His divine plan.
Reflection
Zechariah 7:4 reminds us that divine guidance is a gift from the sovereign Lord. The word of the Lord came to the prophet, showing that God takes the initiative in revealing His will. As we pray, study the Scriptures, and seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we can be confident that God will speak to us through His word. This verse encourages us to approach God with humility, ready to listen and obey, knowing that He is the Lord of hosts who rules over all.
