Malachi 3:16

Posted on 18 May at 14:52
Listen to this article

“Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name.”

Historical Context:Malachi was a prophet who delivered God’s messages to the Israelites after their return from exile in Babylon. During this time, the people had grown complacent in their worship and had neglected to offer their best to God. Malachi confronted the people with their sins, called for repentance, and promised the coming of the Messiah.

  • The Fear of the Lord:

In this verse, we see that those who “feared the Lord” are mentioned. The fear of the Lord refers to a reverential awe and deep respect for God. It involves recognizing God’s holiness, majesty, and authority. This fear leads to obedience and a desire to please God. Those who feared the Lord were faithful individuals who maintained their devotion to God amidst the prevailing spiritual decline.

Communal Fellowship:The verse highlights the interaction among those who feared the Lord. They spoke often to one another, engaging in conversations centered around their faith. This suggests that they found strength and encouragement in gathering together as a community of believers. This fellowship allowed them to share their experiences, insights, and encouragement to remain faithful to God.

Divine Attention and Recognition:The passage reveals that God was attentive to the conversations of those who feared Him. The Lord not only heard their words but also took note of their dedication to Him. He paid attention to their commitment and loyalty, acknowledging their faithfulness amidst a generation that had strayed away from Him.

The Book of Remembrance:As a result of God’s attention, a book of remembrance was written. This book symbolizes God’s recording of the deeds and faithfulness of those who feared Him. It serves as a metaphorical register of their commitment and devotion. It signifies that God remembers and values the faithfulness of His people and will reward them accordingly.

Reflection on God’s Name:The verse mentions that those who feared the Lord “thought upon his name.” Meditating on God’s name signifies reflecting on His nature, character, and attributes. It involves recognizing the significance and authority of God’s name, acknowledging His sovereignty, and aligning one’s thoughts with His will.

Overall, Malachi 3:16 emphasizes the importance of fellowship among believers, the attention of God towards the faithful, and the assurance that He remembers their devotion. It encourages believers to gather together, speak about their faith, and remain steadfast in their commitment to God, even in challenging times.
