Matthew 2:7

Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.

Matthew 2:7 (KJV)

Matthew 2 records the visit of the wise men (Magi) to Jerusalem in search of the newborn King of the Jews. This event took place shortly after Jesus’ birth and highlights the contrast between the Magi’s response and Herod’s reaction to the news of the Messiah.

In verse 7, Herod called the wise men secretly and asked them diligently what time the star appeared. The word “privily” means secretly, showing that Herod did not want his inquiry to be known publicly. His careful questioning was not for worship but to determine the age of the child, so he could later eliminate a potential rival to his throne. The wise men had seen the star in the East and had come to worship the newborn king, but Herod’s interest was political and murderous.

Herod’s secret meeting with the wise men sets the stage for his later decree to kill all male children in Bethlehem aged two and under, based on the time of the star’s appearance (Matthew 2:16). This inquiry, though motivated by deceit, inadvertently played a role in fulfilling the prophecy that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2). Matthew frequently highlights how events in Jesus’ life fulfilled Old Testament prophecies, and here Herod’s scheming becomes part of God’s sovereign plan.

This verse reminds us that even when worldly powers oppose Christ, God’s purposes prevail. Herod’s cunning and ruthless opposition could not thwart God’s plan of redemption through Jesus. Believers can trust that God overrules evil intentions for His glory, just as He used Herod’s inquiry to fulfill prophecy.

Consider the contrast between the wise men’s sincere worship and Herod’s hypocritical pretense. Herod masked his evil intent with a false desire to worship, but his heart was far from God. This challenges us to examine our own motives when we approach Christ—whether we seek Him with genuine faith or merely for our own purposes.
