Matthew 2:6

Posted on 18 May at 14:52

“And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.”

Context:This verse is a prophecy quoted by the chief priests and scribes in response to Herod’s inquiry about the birthplace of the Messiah.

Here are some key points to consider in this verse:

  • Bethlehem:The prophecy specifically mentions Bethlehem, which is a small town in the land of Judah. Bethlehem is significant because it was the birthplace of King David, the great king of Israel, and it was also foretold to be the birthplace of the Messiah (Micah 5:2). This verse establishes Bethlehem as the fulfillment of that prophecy.
  • The Governor:The verse mentions that a Governor or Ruler will come out of Bethlehem. This points to the coming Messiah who will exercise authority over God’s people Israel. This title emphasizes both the kingship and the leadership role of the Messiah.
  • The Ruler of Israel:The prophecy further states that this Governor will rule God’s people Israel. This aligns with the Messianic expectation of the Jewish people, who were awaiting a powerful leader who would deliver them from oppression and establish God’s kingdom on earth.

This verse highlights the fulfilment of Old Testament prophecies regarding the birthplace and role of the Messiah. It affirms that the long-awaited Saviour will come from Bethlehem and will be a ruler over God’s people. It’s important to note that Jesus, the Son of God, was indeed born in Bethlehem (Matthew 2:1), fulfilling this prophecy.

By studying this verse, we can recognise the faithfulness of God in fulfilling His promises and the significance of Jesus’ birth as the long-awaited Messiah and King of Israel.
