Matthew 5:10
Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5:10 (KJV)
Context
This verse is part of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, where He taught His disciples and the crowds about living righteously in the Kingdom of God. It is the eighth and final beatitude, following the blessing on peacemakers in Matthew 5:9 and leading into Jesus’ further teaching about persecution in Matthew 5:11.
In Matthew 5:10, Jesus pronounces a blessing on those who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness. This refers specifically to persecution endured for righteousness’ sake, not for wrongdoing, crimes, or personal offenses. The persecution arises because believers live a godly life that separates them from the world and exposes the unrighteousness of others.
Meaning
The word “blessed” means experiencing divine favor and happiness. Jesus assures those who face persecution that they are recipients of God’s favor and will find true fulfillment in their relationship with Him.
Persecution involves mistreatment, harassment, or oppression because of one’s commitment to Christ and adherence to biblical principles. It may include hostility, discrimination, or even physical harm. The reason for this persecution is specifically righteousness—choosing to obey God rather than conform to the world.
Jesus promises that those who endure persecution for righteousness’ sake will receive the kingdom of heaven. This means that despite present suffering, believers have an eternal inheritance in God’s kingdom, and this blessedness surpasses any temporary hardships.
Application
Jesus encourages His followers to maintain their commitment to righteousness even when it brings opposition. When we face hostility because we live for God, we can take comfort in knowing that we are blessed and that the kingdom of heaven is ours.
Reflection
Matthew 5:10 teaches that those who endure persecution for righteousness’ sake are blessed by God. Despite difficulties, they can find comfort in divine favor and the eternal inheritance that awaits them in the kingdom of heaven.
