Matthew 6:32

“For after all these things do the Gentiles seek: for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.”

Context:Matthew 6 is part of the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus teaches His disciples about various aspects of righteous living. In this particular section, Jesus is addressing the issue of worrying about material needs such as food, drink, and clothing.

Seek first the kingdom of God:Prior to verse 32, Jesus encourages His disciples not to be anxious about these worldly needs, emphasizing that God takes care of His creation and provides for them (Matthew 6:25-31). He reminds them of how God clothes the lilies of the field and feeds the birds of the air, assuring them that they are much more valuable to God than these.

The contrast with Gentiles:Jesus highlights that it is the Gentiles (non-believers or pagans) who strive and worry excessively about material things. By referring to the Gentiles, Jesus is emphasising that His followers should not imitate their behaviour. Instead, they are to have a different perspective and trust in God’s provision.

Your heavenly Father knows your needs:Jesus reassures His disciples that their heavenly Father is fully aware of their needs. As believers, they can take solace in the fact that God intimately knows their circumstances, and they can trust in His faithfulness and care. God’s omniscience extends to even the smallest details of their lives.

Application:This verse encourages believers to prioritise their relationship with God and seek His kingdom above all else. Jesus is teaching that God’s faithful provision is not conditional upon excessive worry or anxious striving. Instead, followers of Christ are called to trust in God’s knowledge of their needs and seek His righteousness and purposes first.
