Matthew 8:18

“Now when Jesus saw great multitudes about him, he gave commandment to depart unto the other side.”

Jesus’ command to depart: Despite the multitude of people around Him, Jesus gave a commandment to depart to the other side. This indicates that Jesus had a specific purpose in mind, which required moving away from the crowd. It shows His intentionality and focused approach to ministry.

Lessons from Matthew 8:18:

• Prioritizing God’s mission: Jesus’ decision to depart highlights the importance of prioritizing God’s mission over popularity or immediate desires. Jesus had a purpose, and He was not swayed by the large crowds or the clamor for His attention. As followers of Christ, we should also seek God’s will and be willing to prioritize His mission above our own desires or worldly expectations.

Application:

• Prioritize God’s mission: In our own lives, we should seek to prioritize God’s mission above worldly distractions and personal desires. This involves seeking His guidance and obeying His commands, even when they may require us to move away from popular or comfortable paths.
• Seek solitude with God: Regularly setting aside time to be alone with God is crucial for spiritual growth. Through prayer, reflection, and study of His Word, we can deepen our relationship with Him, gain wisdom, and find strength to carry out His purposes.
• Balance ministry and self-care: While serving others is essential, it’s also important to maintain a healthy balance between ministry and self-care. Taking time to rest, seek refreshment, and care for our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being enables us to be more effective in our service to God and others.
