Matthew 8:26
And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.
Matthew 8:26 (KJV)
Context
This verse is part of a narrative in the Gospel of Matthew where Jesus demonstrates His authority over nature. Jesus and His disciples were in a boat on the Sea of Galilee when a great storm arose. The waves crashed into the boat, and the disciples feared for their lives.
In their fear, they woke Jesus, who responded by questioning their faith and addressing their fear. Jesus asked, “Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith?” The Greek term for “little faith” (oligopistoi) gently but directly challenges their lack of trust in His power and presence. Their fear was inconsistent with the faith they already had in Him.
After addressing their fear, Jesus “arose” from sleep, demonstrating His authority and power. He rebuked the winds and the sea, commanding them to be silent and still. Miraculously, the elements obeyed His voice, and there was a great calm.
Meaning
This verse teaches that fear can coexist with faith, but Jesus calls His followers to a deeper trust that overcomes fear. The disciples had some faith, yet it was not actively exercised in the storm. Jesus’ rebuke of the wind and sea shows His sovereign control over creation, revealing Him as the divine Son who has authority over the natural world.
Biblical connections
The parallel accounts in Luke and Mark emphasize the same point: Luke asks, “Where is your faith?” and Mark says, “How is it that ye have no faith?” Both highlight that the disciples’ faith was not in active exercise. This event leads the disciples to marvel, asking, “What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!” (Matthew 8:27).
Application
For believers, this passage encourages trusting Christ in the storms of life, knowing that He is both willing and able to bring peace. It reminds us that Jesus is not only aware of our circumstances but also has the power to control and calm them. It challenges us to examine our own faith and confront areas of fear or doubt that hinder us from fully relying on Jesus.
Reflection
Faith, even if small, can be the basis for Christ’s intervention and calm. Jesus’ question to the disciples is also a question to us: Why are we fearful when He is with us? Let us learn to trust His presence and power in every storm.
