Matthew 8:26

Listen to this article

“And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.”

Context: This verse is a part of a narrative in the Gospel of Matthew, where Jesus demonstrates His authority over nature. In this particular passage, Jesus and His disciples were in a boat when a great storm arose on the sea. The waves were crashing into the boat, and the disciples became fearful for their lives.

In their fear, the disciples woke Jesus up, and He responded by questioning their faith and addressing their fear. Jesus asked them, “Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith?” This statement highlights Jesus’ expectation that His disciples should have trusted in His power and presence to protect them, regardless of the circumstances. It implies that fear is often a result of insufficient faith.

After addressing the disciples’ fear and lack of faith, Jesus took action. He “arose” from His sleep, demonstrating His authority and power. Jesus then rebuked the winds and the sea, commanding them to be calm. Miraculously, the elements obeyed His voice, and there was a great calm.

This verse carries several significant teachings for believers. It reminds us that Jesus is not only aware of our circumstances but also has the power to control and calm them. It emphasizes the importance of faith in times of trouble and encourages us to trust in God’s sovereignty and provision. Additionally, the verse challenges us to examine our own faith and confront any areas of fear or doubt that hinder us from fully relying on Jesus.
