Matthew 10:26

Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.

Matthew 10:26 (KJV)

In Matthew 10, Jesus commissions His twelve disciples and prepares them for the opposition they will face as they proclaim the Kingdom of God. He empowers them to heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, and cast out demons, while also warning them of persecution. In verse 26, Jesus directly addresses their fear of those who threaten them, commanding them not to be afraid because God will ultimately reveal all truth.

The reason for fearlessness rests on the certainty of divine revelation: nothing covered will remain unrevealed, and nothing hidden will stay unknown. This statement, likely a familiar proverb among Jesus’ hearers, assures the disciples that their innocence, principles, and integrity, though currently misrepresented, will be vindicated. Conversely, the malice and wickedness of their opponents, though concealed under good names, will be exposed to shame. The Gospel itself, though sometimes hidden and disgraced, will in God’s time break forth with power. The Greek terms for “covered” and “hidden” reinforce the idea of complete disclosure, emphasizing God’s omniscience and sovereignty.

This teaching is echoed in Luke 12:2, where Jesus uses similar language to warn against hypocrisy, and in Luke 8:17, where the same principle is applied to the manifestation of all secrets. These passages reinforce the theme that hidden things will be revealed, deepening our understanding of God’s omniscience.

Consider how this verse applies to your life. Are there areas where fear is hindering your faith and obedience? How can you rely on God’s promise of divine revelation to overcome fear? What steps can you take to trust in God’s sovereignty and seek His guidance in your decisions? The immediate context of Matthew 10:24-31 further encourages trust in God’s care and the value of confessing Christ before men.

Remember to pray and ask the Holy Spirit for guidance and illumination as you study God’s Word. Consider discussing your findings and insights with a fellow believer or a trusted mentor to gain further perspectives.

Meditate on the assurance that nothing can escape God’s knowledge and control. How does this truth impact your perspective on difficult circumstances and challenges? How does it encourage you to live with integrity and trust in God’s justice, even when things seem uncertain?
